Project Type: New build

RIBA Project Stages: 0-3

The client approached us to see whether it might be possible to achieve a plot subdivision on a small parcel of land alongside their existing dwelling. Although heavily constrained by the site topography and shape, we were excited to be asked to come up with a contemporary design solution. The constraints were used to inform and derive a completely bespoke and site specific architectural response, which was incredibly well received by the client.

The design was conceived with contrasting experiences in mind; private and intimate habitable spaces would be located at ground level and served by a sunken courtyard providing external amenity space. First floor level was intended to be a more public facing and open plan space, where the client could entertain guests against the stunning, panoramic backdrop of Poole Harbour. A roof garden would then provide further external amenity space at first floor level.

The large expanse of frameless structural glazing was strategically orientated to frame views of Whitecliff Park and Poole Harbour, whilst screening the adjacent railway line and existing property. The large curved concrete roof would have a green roof covering to lessen the impact on the views from the existing dwelling. and help ground the building in its context.
