sensitively designing new affordable housing for a rural exceptions site

+ project type: affordable & market housing development site

+ RIBA work stages: 0-3

+ location: burley

We were appointed to prepare a feasibility study for the redevelopment of land for residential use. Working closely with a local planning firm, we progressed a sensitive pre-application submission to identify the site’s potential for high-quality (well-needed) affordable housing for the wider community. The design of the site has been kept sensitive to the local landscape setting, providing positive buffer zones around the tree-lined frontage and feature trees within the site. The housing mix has been driven by local needs and a clear shortage in family housing and bungalow provision. We introduced a design aesthetic that reflected the rural, agricultural character whilst bringing through the efficiencies of modern architecture to make the scheme commercially viable and realistic.
Also worth exploring is The Coach House project, a residential conversion we completed in a similar style.
