Contemporary Extension, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Project Type: Alterations and extensions

RIBA Project Stages: 0-6

Budget: £60k

Through extensive discussions with the client we were able to define their brief and, therefore, the architectural response required in order to to achieve their aspirations. It was clear that some simple but key alterations were required to make the existing building function in their desired way. We established fairly quickly that there were two key objectives - firstly providing connection between the kitchen, living and dining spaces and secondly integrating the re-worked internal spaces with the client’s beautiful garden.

Our response was to provide a small but contemporary extension that would link the internal spaces and also open the house up to the garden. This was achieved by using large, corner sliding glazed doors that could be fully opened during the summer months to provide a seamless transition to the external spaces. Coupled with a raised terrace and integrated planters, this has been very successful and the client often leaves the doors open during good weather to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining!
