this project on st clair road in canford cliffs presented a rare opportunity to transform a tired and uninspiring property into a striking three storey family home perched close to the cliff top. although the original house lacked architectural merit and suffered from a poorly functioning layout, the site offered exceptional potential with its proximity to beautiful beaches and elevated position between poole and bournemouth. our design approach reflects the same principles described on our about page, where we seek to transform limitations into architectural strength.

design transformation

working through the brief with our clients, we developed proposals that reimagined the house from the ground up. the design included extending the property and completely reworking the roof form, introducing a bold vaulted roof space that accommodates new bedrooms and flexible living areas. this not only increased the overall volume of the home but also created dramatic interior spaces that frame views and bring light deep into the house.

materiality was chosen to reflect the coastal setting. white render and carefully detailed timber cladding provide a contemporary but warm aesthetic, helping the home sit comfortably within the surrounding environment. the revised design maximises the property’s position, capturing the character of the coastline and strengthening connection to the outdoors.

the proposals went further than any previous permissions achieved on the road. recognising this, we prepared a robust and carefully reasoned planning submission, addressing local constraints and design sensitivities. this thorough approach secured an exciting approval that unlocks the full architectural potential of the site.
