luscombe residence | replacement contemporary house | canford cliffs

a contemporary replacement house in poole designed around protected woodland

+ project type: replacement contemporary house

+ RIBA work stages: 0-3

+ location: canford cliffs, poole

the luscombe residence sits within a heavily wooded plot in canford cliffs, poole. designed as a contemporary replacement home, the project required a careful architectural response that respected protected trees, limited developable areas, and captured the natural character of the site. the brief from our client was to sever part of their garden to form a new building plot and design a prestigious, bespoke  new home . this project reflects the studio’s contextual design philosophy outlined on our about page, where the landscape setting plays a defining role in shaping architecture.

design driven by woodland constraints

the design evolved around strict tree protection requirements, root protection zones, canopy spreads, and height constraints, which demanded high precision and sensitivity. to navigate these limitations, the house adopts angled and cantilevered floor plates that twist and shift away from protected areas. a central spiral staircase anchors these movements, becoming both a structural and architectural focal point.

the exterior uses a restrained palette of darker tones and textured materials that allow the house to sit quietly within its shaded surroundings. large glazed elements open the interior to continuous woodland views, ensuring every room shares a connection to the trees

internal layout and accommodation

the home provides open plan living at ground floor level, with three bedrooms, two en suites, and a family bathroom on the first floor. the second floor accommodates a private master suite with en suite bathroom and a roof terrace overlooking the treetop canopy. this vertical organisation enhances privacy while maintaining strong visual links to the landscape setting.

a detached supercar garage sits at the entrance to the site. it includes extensive workshop facilities for a motor enthusiast; more information on our approach to complex residential sites can be found on our services page.
